When the constructors set themselves to their labour, there are seven possibilities. They are six, and when completely separated, eighteen are the forces they wield, but when they work together head to tail, then twelve are the forces they wield in the cause of economy. Each constructor when working head to tail has two choices, the consequence of the Gate of Necessity: whatever the outcome of one constructor, there are two beginnings which may arise from it. From this law arises the law of division and multiplication, and from here arise the sixty-four divisions of the familiar world, one, two, four, eight, sixteen, thirty-two, sixty-four. Seven steps, seven days, and seven notes in the ear of man.
But lest creation should run down, the seven were implanted in other ways, in the potencies, in the cosmoses, and in the octave which arises from the twelve in the most economical working of the six constructors, in the fourth world. In order that the law of mutual maintenance be carried out by action of the octaves, it is necessary that the mothers be separated, and two of them working together create the force that brings into being the force that maintains the change produced.
The first mother is followed in order by the third, then the first again, the third, the first, and the first followed by the third again. This sequence occurs in the first, third, fifth, sixth, eighth, tenth and twelfth positions. The mutually maintaining octave is started in the seventh position by the first force of the fourth constructor. Here is the second mother and she is followed again by the third mother, the second, the third, the second, the second and the third mother, in the seventh, ninth, eleventh, twelfth, second, fourth and sixth positions.
The mother which starts each octave, the first in the initiating constructor, possesses the greatest energy, and this energy runs down in jumps of three, two, and one steps. The second mother in the initiating constructor starts slowly and builds up to higher energies by one, two and three steps. The mother in the third place maintains the same strength throughout the six constructors in steps of two, two and two.
The octave is the means by which the three mothers set up the process of rhythmic response. It is the law that to each action there is an equal and opposite reaction. The pattern of the octave is the initiating mother followed by two more notes with the same interval; the fourth note is separated from the third by half an interval; the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh notes are separated each by a full interval; the seventh and eighth notes are separated by a half interval; the eighth and first notes are in the ratio of two to one.
When the third mother follows the first mother, the effect is to slow down process; when it leads the first mother, process is speeded up. The places where the third mother stands next to the first mother are the sixth, the ninth and the twelfth. In the sixth position it slows process down; in the ninth it both speeds up and slows down, so there is no effect; but in the twelfth process speeds up to start the next octave.
There are two places where difficulties arise in repetitious or mutually maintaining processes, between the fifth and sixth positions, and between the twelfth and first positions. In the former there must be sufficient power in the beginning to pass this point, and in the latter the external conditions must be satisfactory. In the former the Will of the Father to be, and in the latter the will of the Mother to maintain the Integrity of Unity, create the conditions to complete process.
The Mother through the operation of the octave separates and joins, nurtures and sustains the growth of creation. Nothing is wasted: what is not required by one is used by another.
